Eggs

Farm Fresh Eggs available!

Woodland Acres Farm sells FARM FRESH chicken (Easter Egger), duck (Pekin), and geese (Buff) eggs. They are thoroughly inspected and wiped clean but UNWASHED. Our avian friends are free-range/pasture-raised and supplemented with high value layer feed.

Why farm fresh?

Farm fresh eggs are often considered higher in nutritional value and offer a fresher, richer flavor than store bought adds. This is due primarily to having a more diverse and nutritious diet, leading to eggs with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, E, and D, and beta carotene. Additionally, we gather our eggs daily so there is a shorter time between laying and consumption which can result in a fresher, more flavorful egg.

Information on the Egg Differences, Shelf Life and Safe Handling

What are the differences between chicken, duck, and goose eggs?
Eggs are a very good source of protein, and are packed with other nutrients. For example, goose eggs on average contain 19g of protein compared to 10g for duck eggs and 6g for chicken eggs. Aside from the size difference, duck eggs are more nutrient dense than chicken eggs, including protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and several vitamins and minerals, and goose eggs are packed with a significant amount more of iron, choline, selenium, and vitamin b12. We find duck eggs have a richer and smooth flavor, with a somewhat darker, more orange yolk than our chicken or goose eggs (even though farm fresh eggs in general have a deeper colored yolk than store bought eggs). We noticed our goose eggs taste more like chicken eggs with a paler colored yolk and a higher ratio of egg whites to yolk than duck or chicken eggs. Duck egg shells are thicker than chicken egg shells, and goose eggs have an incredibly thick shell and inner membrane
Unwashed, freshly laid eggs can be kept at room temperature for up to a month before being refrigerated. If you don’t plan to finish them within a month, you can move them to the fridge where they will last for up to 3+ months unwashed. The dates on the container represent the dates the eggs were laid and gathered. Duck and goose eggs have a thicker shell and membrane than chicken eggs so be prepared when you crack them open!
Unwashed eggs still have their bloom or cuticle intact. The bloom is a natural protective coating. This coating keeps bacteria and pathogens from getting into the egg’s interior.
It is recommended to wash the egg immediately before use.
Yes, because washing the egg removes the bloom (the protective membrane) so you will have to refrigerate them right after you wash them, unless you are going to use them right away. Washing also shortens the shelf life by half.
